It’s a challenge to myself when the old video ca It’s a challenge to myself when the old video came up in my memories and I realized that in the last 9 years I just quit trying as hard. I still lift weights but was modifying my pushups to make them more doable. I’ve already progressed over the last couple of weeks but have a long way to go in tempo and reps. This is a lesson in “if you don’t use it you l This is a lesson in “if you don’t use it you lose it”. Yes, I’m older and in 2016 I was about 10 pounds leaner than I am now. I swore to myself I’d stay at my lean weight. It was a big part of my identity. I was the athlete among my friend group. I felt I owed it to myself and others to stay consistent and to remain an example of health and fitness, always hoping to inspire others. In 2016 I easily cranked out 22 of these push-ups and it was almost effortless. Over the last 9 years many things have changed including my routine, hormones, and of course aging. But sometime along the way I just stopped trying as hard. I never quit, I just wasn’t pushing as hard and my inability to crank out a full fledged push-up was just one of the many things that declined. So, a couple of weeks ago as a challenge to myself, I just decided to try. At first I could only do 4. A couple days later I tried again and I did 6. Then yesterday I started with a different mindset telling myself I could do more than 6 and sure enough I did 10. It wasn’t pretty but it was progress. Now I’m on my way to working back to 22 push-ups as a challenge to myself. There’s zero reason I can’t do them, it’s just that I stopped trying. We’ll see how long it takes and if I’ll make the choice to stick with it. It wouldn’t hurt to lose a few pounds either because that changes the mindset too.
